Team Captains – please remember the 3 day rule: the scores should be with the shoulder to shoulder secretary within 3 days of the match being shot (excluding Sundays), either by traditional postcard signed by both captains on the night, or by both of them emailing in the e-card (see main S/S page for details). The League Secretary also asks that a phone-photo be taken of the scoreboard to act as a backstop for lost results and help resolve any issues that may subsequently arise.

*** The average of any reserve must be provided on the result card of their first match (if not before) ***
(Handicap League rule)

Please note: The handicapping system being used this season is again the Bayley system, not the Macrae system.

Latest News (Match commentary by the League Secretary: see below for earlier commentaries)

The last ‘proper’  match was held on 19th March and all matches after that were suspended due to the Coronavirus outbreak. At an LBTSA Committee meeting on 28th May it was decided that the remaining five matches would be called based on the averages declared for the members of each team as nominated at the start of the season.  That decision was challenged by the committee member who had proposed the method of resolving the league and at a subsequent meeting decided that the teams for the remaining matches would be the team members who had shot the most matches. The results have been amended accordingly.

05/06/2020: George Heriot’s FP v Hawick.  The result of this match is a win to Hawick in the Scratch Match and and a win to Heriot’s in the Handicap Match.

05/06/2020: George Heriot’s FP v Balerno & Currie.  The result of this match is a win to Balerno & Currie in Scratch Match and a win to Balernio & Currie in the Handicap Match.

05/06/2020: Watsonians A v Watsonians B.  The result of this match is a win to Watsonians A in Scratch Match and a win to Watsonians B in the Handicap Match.

05/06/2020: Watsonians B v Watsonians A.   The result of this match is a win to Watsonians A in Scratch Match and a win to Watsonians B in the Handicap Match.

Previous match commentary:

22/10/2019: Prestonpans v Balerno & Currie.  Well the 2019-2020 season is now with us and the first match has been shot.   Unfortunately the Prestonpans  team did not shoot very well as can be seen by the scoring.   So Balerno & Currie took all eight points in the scratch match and won all the individual match ups.   The handicap match was won by Balerno & Currie this put a bit of a dent in the Prestonpans hopes of retaining this title.   Best scorer for the Prestonpans team was M Williamson with a 10 points off total score (he normally shoots much better than this) and the best scorer for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 2 points off total score.

29/10/2019: Watsonians A v Hawick. Second match of the season and a surprise win for  Watsonians by a 28 – 35 points off score line.  Watsonians also took six match points from the individual match ups.  Watsonians also won the handicap match.   Best scorer of the evening for Watsonians was O Barron with a 1 point off total score and the best scorer for Hawick was  a tie between A Anderson and K Nixon both with  a 6 points off total score.

02/11/2019: Hawick v Watsonians A. The return match for this tie was a fairly close affair with Watsonians A again winning the tie with a 26 – 20 score line.   The individual match ups went to Watsonians A team taking five of the available eight points.  Watsonians A again won the handicap match giving them a whitewash over the Hawick team reversing last year’s whitewash by Hawick.  Best scorers for the Watsonians A team was A Dove with a 2 points off total score and best scorer for Hawick was A Anderson also with a 2 points off total score.

05/11/2019: Watsonians A v Prestonpans. Easy win for Watsonians this evening as the Prestonpans team did not shoot at all well.  The team’s postal competition scores are generally much better so they must have some sort of mental block when it comes to the Shoulder to Shoulder competition…..more practice required!   Watsonians A took the two scratch match points by a score of 24 – 69, won all eight individual match ups and to rub it in won the handicap match also.  Best score for Watsonians A was O Barron with a two points off total score; the best scorer for Prestonpans was J Young with a nine points off total score.   J Young also had his best score to date with a one point off score for his second card….pity about his first!!

19/11/2019: Watsonians B v George Heriot’s FP.  This was the  Watsonians’ B team’s first outing in the Shoulder to Shoulder league and they narrowly lost to George Heriot’s with a score line of 50-47.  As well as the two match points for the scratch George Heriot’s also took six of the eight points available for the individual match ups.  However the Watsononians’ B team did win the handicap match.  Best scorer for Watsonians B was R Bryce-Stafford with a 6 points off total score and the best scorer for George Heriot’s was C Watson with a 7 points off total score.

21/11/2019: Watsonians B v Balerno & Currie.  Balerno & Currie won the scratch match with a score line of 49-29 and the two points.  In the individual match ups Watsonians managed to take 2 points from Balerno & Currie.  The handicap match went to Watsonains B team.  Best scorer of the evening for Watsonians B was J Gutteridge with a 7 points off total score and the best scorer for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 2 points off total score.

22/11/2019: Hawick v Balerno & Currie.  In a very closely shot match Balerno & Currie came out on top taking the 2 scratch match points by a score line of 28-23.  The individual match ups were evenly spread with each team taking 4 points.  Balerno & Currie also won the handicap match.  Best scorer of the evening for Hawick was A Anderson with a 1 point off total score and the best scorer for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 2 points off total score.

28/11/2019: Prestonpans v George Heriot’s FP.  Better scoring for Prestonpans in their home match versus George Heriot’s losing the match by a score line of 52-38 so two match points going to George Heriot’s.  In the individual match ups Prestonpans’ J Young tied score  with S R Mackenzie thereby gaining 1 point for the Pans team.  The handicap match went to Prestonpans giving them their first win of the season.  Best scorer on the evening for Prestonpans was M Williamson with a 9 points off total score and for George Heriot’s it was C Watson with an 8 points off total score.

05/12/2019: Balerno & Currie v Prestonpans.  More improvement by the Prestonpans team as their scores keep coming down but sadly not enough on this occasion as Balerno & Currie ran out winners with a score line of 25-47 taking both match points and all the points for the individual matchups.  However the Prestonpans team won the handicap match, their second on the bounce…should keep the spirits up!!  Best scorer of the evening for Balerno & Currie was, unsurprisingly, N Georgeson with a 5 points off total score and the best scorer for Prestonpans was M Williamson.

17/12/2019: Hawick v George Heriot’s FP. This was Hawick’s first win of the season by a score of 33-52 to take both match points.  In the individual match ups Hawick took five points with George Heriot’s managing the other 3.  However George Heriot’s won the handicap match.  Best score of the evening for the Hawick team was shared between A Anderson and W Vaughan both with a 5 points off total score.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriot’s was D Aitken with a 3 points off total score.

19/12/2019: Balerno & Currie v George Heriot’s FP.  Balerno & Currie won this local tie with a score of 25-36 taking both match points.  In the individual match ups honours were even with 4 points going to each team.  In the handicap match the win went to Balerno & Currie.  Best score of the evening for Balerno & Currie was D McVicar with a very impressive 1 point off total score.  Best score of the evening for George Heriot’s was D Aitken with a 3 points off total score.

10/01/2020: Hawick v Prestonpans. This has to be the surprise result of the season where Prestonpans won their first Shoulder to Shoulder match in many years by taking the scalp of Hawick, at their range, by a score line of 38-36, it was close as the Prestonpans team had to count up the scores, twice, to realise that they had won.  So 2 match points to Prestonpans and in the individual match ups honours were even with both sides getting 4 points each.  Just to make it a good night for the Prestonpans team they won the handicap match as well.  Best scorer of the evening for Hawick was A Anderson with a 4 points off total score and the best scorer for Prestonpans was M Utsi also with a 4 points off total score.  Magnanimous in defeat the Hawick team, as usual, put on a good feast.

14/01/2020: Watsonians B v Hawick.  Hawick got back to winning ways in this away match at Watsonians B by a score line of 52-29 taking the 2 scratch match points.  In the individual match ups Watsonians managed to take 2 points off Hawick thanks to J Gutteridge, however, Watsonians B won the Handicap match.  Best scorer of the evening for Hawick was W Vaughan with a 2 points off total score and the best scorer for Watsonians B was J Gutteridge with an 11 points off total score.

16/01/2020: Watsonians A v Balerno & Currie.  Not often we see a tied match in the Shoulder to Shoulder league but here we got a 29-29 score line.  Even the individual match ups were tied at 4 points each.  However Balerno & Currie sneaked the handicap match….surprised that wasn’t a tie as well!  Best score of the evening for Watsonians A was A Dove with a 3 points off total score and the best score for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 4 points off total score.

28/01/2020: Watsonians B v Prestonpans.  After their highlight victory over Hawick two weeks ago Prestonpans were brought back down to earth when one of their shooters had a very bad night.  Needless to say Watsonians B team won the scratch match and 2 points, the individual match up points were shared 4 a apiece and the handicap  match points  went to Watsonians B.   Best scorer of the evening for Watsonians B was J Gutteridge with a 7 points off total score and best scorer for Prestonpans was M Williamson with a 6 points off total score.

30/01/2020: George Heriot’s FP v Watsonians A.  The Watsonians A team won this match by a score line of 33-18 with their shooters scoring a combined total of 6 points off on detail 2 last night giving them the 2 match points.  Due to this good shooting Watsonians A also took all 8 points for the individual match ups.  Just to rub salt in George Heriots wounds Watsonians A also won the handicap match.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriots was R Brown with a 6 points off total score and the best scorer for Watsonans A was D Caughey with a 3 points off total score.

06/02/2020: Balerno & Currie v Hawick.  Balerno & Currie won the 2 match points with a score line of 28-34, a close run match.  The individual match ups went 6 points to Balerno & Currie and 2 points to Hawick.  The handicap match was won by Balerno & Currie who now sit top of both the scratch and handicap leagues.   Best scorer of the evening for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 3 points off total score and the best scorer for Hawick was shared by A Anderson and W Vaughan both with a 6 points off total score.

11/02/2020: Prestonpans v Watsonians B.  Well this was a nail biting end to this match as the scores were being put onto the scoreboard – everyone was literally counting up as the scores appeared and it was 1 point here, 2 points there, then back to one point.  Eventually as the totals went on the board the match went to Prestonpans by a score line of 43-45.   So a second win of the season for Prestonpans and 2 welcome match points.  The individual match points eventually went Prestonpans way in taking 5 of the available 8 points.  To make it a good night for  Prestonpans they also won the handicap match. Best scorer of the evening for Prestonpans was J Young with a 9 points off total score (just as well after his debacle at Watsonians B the previous match!!).  Best scorers  for Watsonians B were shared between three shooters, E Stanley, R Bryce-Stafford and J Gutteridge all with a 10 points off total score.

18/02/2020: Watsonians A v George Heriot’s FP.  A win for Watsonians A by a score line of 27-35 keeping them close behind Balerno & Currie at the top of the league and still with a match in hand.  It was a fairly close match, points wise, with only 8 points in it.  The points in the Individual match ups  went to  Watsonians A taking 5 and George Heriots taking 3.  The Handicap match was won by George Heriot’s.  Best scorer of the evening for Watsonians A was D Caughey with a 2 points off total score and the best scorer for George Heriot’s was C Watson with a 5 points off total score.

20/02/2020: George Heriot’s FP v Prestonpans.  Prestonpans were hoping for a record breaking 3rd win in one season but sadly it was not to be as George Heriot’s won the 2 scratch match points by a score line of 31-42.  In the individual match ups Prestonpans managed to steal 2 points from George Heriot’s.  However the smiles were back on the faces of the Prestonpans team as they won the handicap match and that win also put them back on top of this league, definitely smiles all round having won this league last year.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriot’s was D Aitken with a 4 points off total score and the best scorer of the evening for Prestonpans was M Williamson with a 7 points off total score.

27/02/2020: Balerno & Currie v Watsonians B.  In this encounter Balerno & Currie won the scratch match with a 35-44 score line taking the 2 match points.  In the individual match ups Watsonians B team managed to take 3 of the 8 available points. However in the handicap match Watsonians B took the 2 points with a comfortable win.  Beat scorer of the evening for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 5 points off total score and the best scorer for Watsonians B was J Gutteridge with an 8 points off total score.

05/03/2020: Balerno & Currie v Watsonians A.  Watsonians A team beat the Balerno & Currie team by a score line of 49-28 in the scratch match taking the 2 points.  In the individual match ups the points went 2 to Balerno & Currie with 6 points going to the Watsonians A team.  The handicap match was also won by Watsonians A.   Best scorer of the evening for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 6 points off total score and the best scorer for Watsonians A was P Brett with a 5 points off total score.

06/03/2020: Prestonpans v Hawick.  Prestonpans went into this home match with high hopes of doing the double over Hawick but sadly it was not to be as Hawick won the scratch match with a score line of 48-28.  In the individual match ups Prestonpans managed to take 2 points from Hawick.  However in the handicap match Prestonpans maintained their position at the top of the handicap league by beating Hawick.  The race for this title is hotting up as there are four teams neck and neck in this race.   Best scorer of the evening for Prestonpans was M Williamson with a 7 points off total score.  Best scorer for Hawick was shared between A Anderson and W Vaughan with a 5 points off total score.

11/03/2020: George Heriot’s FP v Watsonians B.  A close match this one with George Heriot’s just managing to win the scratch match points from Watsonians B by a score line of 37-40.   In the individual match ups the points were split 5 to George Heriot’s and 3 to Watsonians B.   It was a different story in the handicap match with the win going to Watsonians B thereby keeping the pressure on Prestonpans at the top of the handicap league.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriot’s was D Aitken with a 4 points off total score and for Watsonians B it was J Gutteridge with a 5 points off total score.

19/03/2020: Prestonpans v Watsonians A.  In this the last Shoulder to Shoulder match due to the ongoing problem of the Coronavirus this match was shot as a Postal match with a bit of a difference.  Due to the short notice stickers, as per the S2S rules, could not be created and sent out in time for the match to take place.  An ad-hoc process was formulated and worked extremely well as a one off situation agreed between the two teams.   As to the match the Prestonpans team managed their best ever combined score but still lost the scratch match to Watsonians A by a score line of 35-22 so 2 match points to Watsonians A.  In the individual match ups Prestonpans managed to nick 2 points off Watsonians A.   The Handicap match was won by Prestonpans.   Best scorer of the evening for Prestonpans was J Young with a 6 points off total score and the best scorer for Watsonians A was D Caughey with a 3 points off total score.
