News, Results and League Tables for Division 1

Team Captainsplease remember the 3 day rule: the scores should be with the shoulder to shoulder secretary within 3 days of the match being shot (excluding Sundays), either by traditional postcard signed by both captains on the night, or by both of them emailing in the e-card (see main S/S page for details). The League Secretary also asks that a phone-photo be taken of the scoreboard to act as a backstop for lost results and help resolve any issues that may subsequently arise.

*** The average of any reserve used must be provided on the result card of their first match (if not before) ***
(Handicap League rule)

Please note: For those who might be confused with the handicap scores being produced (there has been one query already), participants should be aware that the handicapping system used this season is the Bayley system, not the Macrae system that was used last season.  This gives a completely different range of handicap scores and is intended to give the lower-average teams a better chance of doing better. The jury’s out on that, so far.

Latest News (Match commentary by the League Secretary: see below for earlier commentaries)

After the last match was shot on 29th March,  Watsonians have emerged winners of the league to take the Younger Shield once again, holding off Hawick, who had a better shooting average, by only two points. Hawick get their revenge by winning the Matchplay trophy though. Watsonians also won the Handicap league, with Hawick again the runners-up

Bill Vaughan of Hawick won the Hayhoe Cup for having the best average in the league (98.36).

23/03/2018: Hawick v Prestonpans B.
As expected Hawick took the scratch match but only six of the available match points as the Prestonpans B team  won one of the match-ups on the night.  However the good news for the Prestonpans B team is that they won the handicap match.  Best scorers for Hawick were K Nixon with a 3 points off total score closely followed by A Anderson and W Vaughan both with a 4 points off total score.  Best scorer for the Prestonpans B team was J Young with a 12 points off total score.

23/03/2018: Prestonpans B v Hawick.
In the second match of this double header Hawick won the scratch match and all eight match points.  Hawick also won the handicap match so no happy ending for the Prestonpans B team.  Best scorer for Prestonpans B was C Conway with an 11 points off total score.  Best scores for Hawick were W Vaughan with a 2 points off total score followed by A Anderson with a 3 points off total score.

29/03/2018: George Heriot’s FP v Watsonians.
The last match of the 2017-18 Shoulder to Shoulder season and it was a close one….would have been even closer if one of the George Heriot’s shooters didn’t have two cross shots and a penalty of 4 points.   So Watsonians won the match courtesy of the 4 penalty points, also taking 6 out of the 8 match points.  Watsonians also won the handicap match.  Best scorers of the evening were P Brett for Watsonians with a 5 points off total and for George Heriots D Aitken had a 7 points off total score.

Previous match commentary:

12/10/2017: Redcraig v Prestonpans B.
First match of the 2017-2018 Shoulder to Shoulder season and it did not go too well for the Prestonpans B team who really did not shoot to their averages.  This was a first match for one of their Juniors, J Tracey, and he did not shoot all that well considering he is shooting an average of 6 points off total in postal competitions.  So a win for Redcraig both in the scratch and handicap leagues taking all 8 points.  Best score of the evening was by Redcraig’s D McConnell with a 5 points off total score.

16/10/2017: Redcraig v George Heriot’s FP.
A fairly comfortable win in this match for George Heriot’s FP against Redcraig away from home.  Heriot’s took 6 of the 8 points available in the scratch match, however, Redcraig won the handicap match.  Best score of the evening went to George Heriot’s S R McKenzie with a 5 points off total score closely followed by Heriot’s D Aitken with a 6 points off total score

17/10/2017: Watsonians v Balerno & Currie.
Watsonians were comfortable winners in this home match versus Balerno & Currie and also won the handicap match as well.  Best score of the evening was by Watsonians O Barron with an impressive 2 points off total score closely followed by his fellow shooter A Dove with a 3 points off total score.  Best scorer for Balerno & Currie was P May with a 7 points off total score.

26/10/2017: Watsonians v Prestonpans B.
Watsonians had an expected win over the Prestonpans B team whose score improved greatly from their first shoulder to shoulder match of the season.   Two shooters from Watsonians had perfect scores on their second cards but R Thomson had the best score of the match with a 3 points off total score.  Watsonians also won the handicap match as well.  Special mention to J Tracey of the Prestonpans B team who  shot a 14 points off total score….this is only his second competitive shoulder to shoulder match.

27/10/2017: Hawick v Balerno & Currie.
In a fairly close match Hawick came out winners by 14 points winning both the scratch and handicap matches [You sure about that? Ed.].  Best score of the evening was Hawick’s  W Vaughan with an impressive 3 points off total score.  Balerno & Currie’s nearest  scorer was N Georgeson with a 7 points off total score.

30/10/2017: Redcraig v Prestonpans A.
A win for the Prestonpans A team last night, in both Scratch and Handicap matches, but not in the way they would have wanted.  One of the Redcraig shooters failed to turn up for the match so the win went to the Pans but Redcraig still managed to to take 6 match points.  Best score of the evening went to Prestonpans M Williamson with a 4 points off total score.

02/11/2017: Balerno & Currie v Hawick.
In a close match between these two teams Hawick managed to edge the win in the scratch match with 7 points to spare and took 6 of the 8 match points.  However, along with the 2 match points gained, Balerno & Currie won the handicap match.   There were some low scores and in some individual encounters there  were only  one or two points separating the shooters.   Best scores of the evening went to Hawick’s W Vaughan with a 2 points off and A Anderson with a 3 points off total score.

06/11/2017: Prestonpans B v George Heriot’s FP.
Unfortunately one of the Prestonpans B shooters took ill and had to be replaced at very short notice.  As they expected they were  beaten by  George Heriot’s  in the scratch match but, all was not lost, as J Tracey one of the Prestonpans Juniors shot a very good 19 points off total taking 2 match points in the process.  To top it off Prestonpans B won the handicap match.  Best score of the evening went to George Heriot’s C Watson with a 3 points off total score.

09/11/2017: Balerno & Currie v Watsonians.
In this closely shot match Watsonians won both the scratch and handicap matches but did not win all the match points.  These were shared 4 points apiece due to some good shooting by both teams.  Best scores of the evening went to D Caughey (Watsonians) with a 1 point off total, closely followed by N Georgeson (Balerno & Currie) with a  3 points off total, R Thomson (Watsonians) with a 4 points off total and P Brett (Watsonians) with a 5 points off total score.

10/11/2017: Hawick v Prestonpans A.
Prestonpans A lost both the scratch and handicap match to Hawick last night.  The Pans team had one their junior  shooters  A Winters (only 15) shooting on her first ever shoulder to shoulder competition and acquitted herself with a decent score.   Best scores of the evening went to Hawick’s W Vaughan and A Anderson  each with a  4 points off total, closely followed by their colleague K Nixon with a 5 points off total.  Best score for Prestonpans was M Williamson with a 10 points off total score.
Footnote – the after match food was, as usual very good, but there was some ribbing for one of the Pans team from a member of the Hawick team…about a quiche…I was going to name and shame but in the interests of decency I won’t 🙂

14/11/2017: Prestonpans B v Watsonians.
A valiant try by the Prestonpans B team last night and by far their best total points off score to date and they even managed to take two match points from a very good Watsonians team.  So the scratch and also the handicap matches went Watsonians way.  Best points off total scores of the evening went to Watsonians R Thomson (3), D Gutteridge (4) ,  R Bryce-Stafford (5) and Prestonpans C Conway with a 6 points off total score

16/11/2017: Prestonpans A v Balerno & Currie.
Balerno & Currie managed their first win of the season against Prestonpans A in the scatch match, however, Prestonpans A won the handicap match.  Six match points went to Balerno & Currie whilst two went to Prestonpans A with M Williamson having the best score of the match with a 6 points off total score narrowly beating Balerno & Currie’s N Georgeson who had a 7 points off total score.

16/11/2017: Redcraig v Hawick.
Hawick  took full points off Redcraig with some good shooting in the scratch match although Redcraig won the handicap match.   Best scores of the evening went to Hawick’s W Vaughan with a 3 points off total  and two of his team mates K Nixon and A Anderson  both had 7 points off total scores.

30/11/2017: George Heriot’s FP v Balerno & Currie.
In this home from home match at Balerno & Currie’s range it was Balerno & Currie who won the scratch match but lost out on 2 match points to George Heriots.  Balerno & Currie also won the handicap match.  Best scores of the evening went to Balerno & Currie’s N Georgeson with a 4 points off total  followed by two team mates  P May and M Sinclair with 7 points off total scores.  Best scores for George Heriot’s were S R Mackenzie and D Aitken both with 8 points off total scores.

30/11/2017: Watsonians v Prestonpans A.
Some very impressive shooting took place in this match by Watsonians ending up with a  total points off score of 16, best of the season  by a fair distance so far, took both the scratch and handicap matches.  Best scores were Watsonians A Dove with a 0 points off score very closely followed by his colleague R Thomson with a 1 point off total score.  Sadly the Prestonpans A team could not compete with this kind of scoring and the best score for them was M Williamson with an 8 points off total score (definitely off colour tonight for him).

04/12/2017: Redcraig v Watsonians.
Watsonians were not at their best in last night’s match versus Redcraig but still managed the win in the scratch match and took all 8 match points.  However Redcraig managed to win the handicap match which takes them up to second place in the Handicap League.   Best scorer for Watsonians was R Thomson with a 6 points off total and for Redcraig their best scorer was D McConnell with a 10 points off total score.

05/12/2017: Hawick v George Heriot’s FP.
With some good shooting Hawick sealed a  victory versus George Heriot’s taking both the scratch and handicap matches and all 8 match points with all scores in single figures.  Best scorer for Hawick was K Nixon with a 3 points off total and for George Heriot’s  C Watson had an 8 points off total score.

05/12/2017: Prestonpans B v Balerno & Currie.
Prestonpans B team had a bit of an off night versus Balerno and Currie losing both the scratch and handicap matches and all 8 match points.  Best scorers for Balerno and Currie were P May with a 4 points off total closely followed by his colleagues A Robertson (5), N Georgeson (6) and M Sinclair (8).  Prestonpans best scorer was one of their junior shooters with an 11 points off total score.

14/12/2017: George Heriot’s FP v Prestonpans B.
Prestonpans B team suffered an unfortunate loss of a team member due to the loss of a tooth  and had to call  in a very late stand in who has not participated in a shoulder to shoulder match before and was shooting with an unfamiliar rifle and sights that were not set up for him.   Not surprisingly George Heriots ran out winners of the scratch match but only managed to take 6 match points.  The other 2 match points went to Prestonpans B  shooter J Young with his team’s best score with a 12 points off total.   Surprisingly the handicap match was won by the Prestonpans B team which I’m sure will be a bit of a surprise to them when they see this.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriot’s was S R Mackenzie with a 6 points off total score.

11/01/2018: Balerno & Currie v Prestonpans B.
Balerno & Currie won this match and took 6 match points and some very good shooting from Prestonpans J Tracey (who is one of the club’s juniors) saw them take home 2 match points.  Prestonpans B also won the handicap match.  Best scores of the evening saw  Balerno & Currie’s A Robertson and Prestonpans J Tracey share the best score with a 4 points off total score.

11/01/2018: Prestonpans A v Redcraig.
Prestonpans A shooters all shot single figure scores (this is  a first) on their first cards but faded away, badly, on their second cards.  Redcraig won the match taking 6 match points with 2 going to Prestonpans A and Redcraig also won the handicap match.   Best scores of the evening were,  for Redcraig – K McConnell  with 10, A McConnell  with 11 points off and for Prestonpans A – M williamson with a 12 points off total score.

25/01/2018: Balerno & Currie v Redcraig.
A bit of an off night for the Redcraig team with a result that was intimated to me as a disaster of biblical proportions!!  As a result Balerno & Currie took all match points in the scratch match and also won the handicap match.  Best score of the evening went to Balerno & Currie’s N Georgeson with a 4 points off total score.

30/01/2018: Hawick v Watsonians.
Some excellent shooting in this Hawick v Watsonians shoulder to shoulder match – 3 perfect 100’s, three 1 point off scores, two 2 points off scores, five 3 points off scores.  This makes it the lowest scoring match of the season and the first tied match….very impressive. Watsonians won the handicap match.  Best scorers of the evening, sharing a 2 points off total, score were Hawick’s W Vaughan and Watsonians A Dove, closely followed by, Hawck’s K Nixon and Watsonians P Brett with a 3 points off total score.   Well done to both teams.

01/02/2018: Balerno & Currie v George Heriot’s FP.
Closely shot match narrowly won by Balerno & Currie by 5 points also taking 6 match points in the process.  Balerno & Currie also won the handicap match.  Best scorers of the evening were N Georgeson of Balerno & Currie with a 4 points off totals score and for Heriots it was D Aitken with a 7 points off total score.

06/02/2018: Watsonians v Redcraig.
Not a good night for the Redcraig team in this shoulder to shoulder match at Watsonians range last night.  Watsonians also won the handicap match to boot.  Best score of the evening went to Watsonians P Brett with a 3 points off total score.  A bit of a scoring collapse for the Redcraig shooters!!

08/02/2018: Prestonpans A v Hawick.
Hawick took both the scratch and handicap matches as the Prestonpans A team, well  at least two of their team, did not shoot at all well.  Best scorer for Hawick was K Nixon with a 2 points off total score and for Prestonpans it was M Williamson with a 10 points off total score.

12/02/2018: Prestonpans A v George Heriot’s FP.
Another match where the Prestonpans A team should have done better  and did not.  Although they did manage to take 2 match points from Heriot’s they still lost both the scratch and handicap matches.  Best scorer for George Heriot’s was C Watson with a 7 points off total score and for Prestonpans A  W Horton had an 11 points off total score.

15/02/2018: Prestonpans B v Redcraig.
Sadly Redcraig were unable to field a team for this match at the Prestonpans B team’s range so  all match points and handicap match awarded to the Prestonpans B team.  They decided to shoot their cards so that their scores contributed to their overall averages.

15/02/2018: Watsonians v Hawick.
In this return match, after their first match was tied at 19-19, both sets of shooters had another good evening, however, Watsonians edged the match  by just 2 points but again the match points were equally shared at 4 apiece.   Hawick beat Watsonians in the handicap match.   Again there was some exceptional shooting and best scores of the evening went to  Watsonians A Dove and Hawick’s K Nixon with impressive 2 points off total score each.

20/02/2018: Prestonpans A v Watsonians.
Watsonians had a bit off an off night shooting at the Prestonpans range but still managed to beat the Prestonpans A team but only by 18 points as Prestonpans total score of 50 points off total is their best of the season so far and they managed to nick 2 match points into the bargain.  Watsonians  won the handicap match.  Best scorer for Watsonians was G Gooch with a 4 points off total score and the best score of the evening for Prestonpans was P Devonald with a 9 points off total score.

06/03/2018: Watsonians v George Heriot’s FP.
Watsonians edged this match by just 7 points and they also won the handicap match, however, George Heriot’s managed to pinch 2 match points from Watsonians.  Best scorers of the evening were for – Watsonians G Gooch with a 5 points off total, closely followed by P Brett with a 6 points off total.  Best for George Heriots was D Aitken with a 6 points off total score.

08/03/2018: George Heriot’s FP v Redcraig.
George Heriot’s won the scratch match and took all eight match points, however, Redcraig shot to their averages and took the handicap match.  Best scorers for George Heriot’s were S R Mackenzie with an 8 points off total score closely followed by C Watson with a 9 points off total score.  Best for Redcraig was K Karte with a 12 points off total score.

15/03/2018: Balerno & Currie v Prestonpans A.
Balerno & Currie won the scratch match but only by 11 points. However, Prestonpans A took 2 match points from Balerno & Currie.  There was some good news for the Prestonpans A team in that they won the handicap match. Best scorer for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with an 8 points off total score and best scorer for the Prestonpans A team was M Williamson with a very good 2 points off total score with his second card a perfect 0 points.

15/03/2018: Hawick v Redcraig.
Unfortunately Redcraig were unable to travel down to Hawick and therefore conceded both the scratch and handicap matches to Hawick.

18/03/2018: George Heriot’s FP v Hawick.
Hawick won the scratch match by 12 points but George Heriot’s won 3 match points with Hawick taking the other 5. Hawick also won the handicap match.  Some very similar scoring from the George Heriot’s shooters with three of the team each shooting a 6 points off total score – S R Mackenzie, D Aitken and C Watson.   Best scorers for Hawick were A Anderson with a 2 points off total score and W Vaughan with a 4 points off total score .

20/03/2018: George Heriot’s FP v Prestonpans A.
Although this was a home fixture for George Heriot’s the match was shot at the Prestonpans’ range due to the Balerno & Currie range being unavailable.  George Heriot’s won both the scratch and handicap matches although Prestonpans A managed to steal 2 match points from them in the scratch match.  Best scorers for George Heriots were D Aitken and C Watson both with a 6 points off total score.   Best score for Prestonpans A was M Williamson with an 11 points off total score.   A big thank you to A Winters of Prestonpans (one of their juniors) for stepping up at to shoot at the last minute (and shot well) due to work committments of one of their shooters.

21/03/2018: Redcraig v Balerno & Currie.
Sadly Redcraig’s season  ended with another match conceded as they were unable to put a team together for this match v Balerno & Currie.

22/03/2018: Prestonpans A v Prestonpans B.
The season-long awaited match between the A and B Prestonpans teams finally took place last night.  In a very closely shot match the Prestonpans A team shaded the scratch win by just 2 points, however, the match points were shared 4 apiece.  The Prestonpans B team will be smiling as they won the handicap match.   Best scorers for the A team were M Williamson with a 12 points off total score and P Devonald with a 14 points off total score.  Best for the B team  was C Conway with a 13 points off total score.

22/03/2018: Prestonpans B v Prestonpans A.
The second match of this double-header was a bit more separated in terms of points scored and the Prestonpans A team won by 12 points.  However the B team managed to take 6 of the available match points due to some bad inordinately and unexpectedly bad shooting by three of the A Team. Only their captain M Williamson came out of this match with any credit although his score was not his best.  Again Prestonpans B won the handicap match so they have the bragging rights over the A team in the handicap laeague until next year. Best scorer for the B team was J Young with a 12 points off total and best for the A team was M Williamson with a 7 points off total score.
