Entries due soon
The closing date for the Shoulder-to-Shoulder, the Team Postal, the Club Pairs, the Individual Benchrest, the CYOH Team & Individual Leagues is Monday 4th September.
(Note that the team size for the CYOH Team comp has been reduced from 4 to 3 to try to encourage more entries.)
The affiliation and entry forms for the 2023-4 season are available in the ‘Forms & Minutes’ link in the sidebar. They have already been distributed to currently affiliated clubs but any others who might be interested in joining in our competitions this season are invited to request the password to access them from the Site Administrator using the Contact us link above (where the forms themselves may be requested directly if desired).
Outdoor Champions 2023-24
There was a disappointingly low turnout of LBTSA-qualified shooters at Alloa’s Double Dewar Open Meeting at the weekend but there were enough to provide our Outdoor Champions for this year.
Congratulations to Sinclair Bruce (Balerno & Currie) on winning the McLennan Medal for the 7th time, and to Rhona Dove (Watsonians) on winning the Ettrick & Lauderdale Trophy for the handicap championship.
[NB The handicap adjustments by Class originally given below were not used. Instead it was thought more appropriate to apply the handicaps used at the meeting for its Team competition, viz. A+0, B+4, C+8 and D+12.]
Firearms Licensing Consultation
The Home Office is conducting a consultation on the the subject of the issue and renewal of firearms certificates. Please take the time to respond to it as it potentially affects all current and future FAC holders, not necessarily in a good way. Take this link to go the to consultation web page. It contains a lot of background information as well as the survey itself, which can be taken online.
BASC have provided suggested answers to all the questions on the survey with the intention of safeguarding FAC and SGC holders in the future, with reasonings for each suggestion. You can make up your own mind if you agree with them or not.
You have until 23rd August to respond.
Outdoor Championships
LBTSA (and under its various guises over the decades) has a trophy for an Outdoor Champion (The McLennan Medal), pus a handicap equivalent (The Ettrick & Lauderdale Papereweight Trophy). These have been competed for for many years at the NSRA’s Scottish National Meeting, based on the Unsquadded Aggregate there.
That meeting has not been held since 2019 so we have not had Outdoor Champions since then. The McLennan Medal goes back to 1910 so it would be a pity if this championship just faded away as the future of the Scottish Meeting is uncertain at best.
So, it has been decided that as long as the Scottish Meeting is not being held, our Outdoor Championships will be decided at the Double Dewar Open Meeting run by Alloa & District RC in August (19th & 20th this year). Take this link to download an entry form. You are advised not to leave your entry too late as this is a popular meeting.
The Scratch Champion for 2023-24 will be the competitor with the best aggregate regardless of class.
The Handicap Champion for 2023-24 will be the competitor from any class with the best adjusted aggregate depending on class (A +0, B +11, C +21, D +32).
These Championships are confined to residents of the LBTSA administrative area (i.e. Edinburgh, the three Lothians, The Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway). There is no fee – all you pay are the entry fees to the meeting (£12 or £10 for Juniors).
Committee places
At the AGM last night all committee places were filled by the previous incumbents except those of Treasurer and County Captain, which are now vacant.
If you are interested in taking up either of those posts, please contact the Secretary (use link above) as soon as possible.
It’s important to have a Treasurer as the Association cannot function properly without one.
2023 AGM
The 4th AGM of the Lothian & Borders Target Shooting Association will take place at the range of Balerno & Currie RC on Wednesday 17th May at 7.30pm. Details have been sent to club contacts. All members of affiliated clubs are invited to attend.
As last year, it will be a ‘hybrid’ meeting, but due to the limited bandwidth at the range it is requested that everybody who can attend should do so personally to allow as many as possible of those who cannot do so to be able to join in online.
We are not using Zoom this time but Google Meet instead as there is no time restriction with that. However, users must be logged in to a Google account to join. If you don’t have one, it is free to set one up. Please join by 7:25 in case you have any technical issues so the meeting can start at 7:30.
You can join the online meeting using the link given on the secure area page that is shown by clicking the AGM Minutes button given from taking the Forms & Minutes link in the sidebar. The link has also been sent to club contacts.
(Send a request to the Site Administrator via the Contact Us link above for the password to the secure area if you do not have it.)
The Agenda and the minutes of the 3rd AGM are also available in that page of the secure area, and the Prize List is available here (as well as under Competitions/Prizelists above).
Please note that nominations for the vacant post of County Captain and the new role of Publicity Officer are invited.
County Teams 2022-23 – update 2
The L&B County teams had a very good season. Eight teams were entered: five of them won their division and two were second. A first-class showing all round. Here’s a summary:
Main prone A team: div 2, 2nd
Main prone B team: div 8, 2nd
Women’s prone team: div 3, 1st
Veterans prone team: div 2, 1st
Junior A team: div 2, 1st
Junior B team: div 3, 1st
Air Pistol team: div 2, 6th
Benchrest team: div 5, 1st.
Congratulations to all those in the winning teams. Our new Benchrest team won its division on its first outing but only after a nail-biting finish, having to win their last match. They did so after a tie on gunscore and won on X-bulls.
Update 1:
The winner of the County Silver Medal is Niall Georgeson of Balerno & Currie. Congratulations to him.
County Awards: Only one shooter qualified for an Award this season – Rorie Watt of George Watson’s. All the other team members were ‘old hands’ who have already received one or those in their first year in a team.
Update 2:
All the county team scores and results for the prone teams are now on the County Teams page, along with the Averages report.
We will need a new County Captain next season as Rhys is stepping down. Anyone interested in taking on the post should contact the Secretary (see above), hopefully before the AGM, which will be on 17th May (formal notice of that will come out in due course).
Shoulder-to-Shoulder League
The S/S League has finished and it’s a clean sweep for Balerno & Currie, who won both the Scratch and Handicap leagues. The runners-up were George Heriot’s FP and Watsonians respectively. Balerno & Currie also won the Matchplay league.
Sinclair Bruce (Balerno & Currie) had the top average in both the Scratch and Handicap leagues.
Congratulations to these winners.
Take the link in the ‘Competitions’ drop-down menu above to see full details.
Individual Postal League
The final results of the Individual Postal League are now available. Take the link in the ‘Competitions’ drop-down above to see the full details. Congratulations to all the division winners.
Individual Championship 2022-23
The Final of the 2022-23 Individual Championship took place last night at Balerno & Currie’s range. There had been three call-offs from the original list of sixteen qualifiers and reserves filled those places. The Final consisted of five from Edinburgh University, four from Balerno & Currie, three from George Watson’s, and two each from Watsonians and Hawick. That’s much more of a mix than we have had in previous seasons and a full house meant that an elimination round was not required. The winner was Niall Georgeson of Balerno & Currie, who beat clubmate Sinclair Bruce in the Final. Congratulations to him.
The full results can be seen here, but here’s a summary:
I won’t go into all the details of the first round, but the pick of the ties was undoubtedly multiple winner Alasdair Horne versus Sinclair Bruce, who, surprisingly to this writer at least, had never won this Championship before. It was Sinclair who proceeded to round 2 despite Alasdair scoring the first of only two ‘possibles’ scored all evening.
The other round 1 winners were Niall Georgeson, James Gutteridge (Watsonians), Alan Anderson (Hawick), Rorie Watt (George Watson’s), Kirsty Scott (Balerno & Currie) who beat the only other lady in the Final, Lilly Brechin who has now learned the rules about cross-shooting; Daniel Gutteridge (Edinburgh University) and Keith Nixon (Hawick).
In round 2, James unfortunately had to withdraw after shooting his first card against Niall due to eyesight problems; Alan was well beaten by Rorie; Sinclair overcame Kirsty helped by the other ‘possible’ of the night and Daniel got the better of Keith after a re-gauge.
In the first semi-final, it took two regauges to separate Niall and Rorie, with Niall progressing to the final. In the other, Sinclair beat Daniel by only one point after matching first cards.
In the final, Niall took the trophy for the first time with scores of 98, 99 versus Sinclair’s 95,99.
The shoot started late due to most of the EU contingent being held up in traffic and it went on far too long and not just because of that. Thanks to all who stuck it out to the end and I hope everyone got home not too late.
We will look at the timing of this Final for the future. It’s probably ok to run it on a weekday evening if there is no need for a round of 16, but if there is, then a weekend afternoon will probably be better.
Benchrest league – completed
The second LBTSA season of benchrest has finished. Take the benchrest dropdown from the Competitions menu above to see full details, but here is a report on the season’s activities by the league organiser:
LBTSA Benchrest review for the 22/23 season.
Our seconded season of Benchrest competition started with more entries, 16 in total. Age range spanned teenagers to octogenarians, with the ladies having both teenagers and retired shooters involved. Clearly Benchrest appeals to a wide variety of shooters. Three clubs had entries and if any other clubs are shooting Benchrest please consider joining in next Winter.
Congratulation to Robin Thomson (Div. 1), Keith Nixon (Div. 2) and Sean Fletcher (Div. 3). Please note one from each of the 3 clubs that entered.
Unfortunately, we had 2 early withdrawals, one having to stop shooting due to unavailability of home care coverage for a few hours in the evening. Illness also saw us loose another contender after Christmas.
I must apologies for the lack of timely results. This was due to numerous extensions being given across the Divisions and I saw little point in putting up results that could all change (due to the scoring system) when the missing cards appeared. For our younger shooters exams and study clearly interfered with their shooting. As they were new to the sport, extensions were given but sadly some were not taken up and there are a multitude of No Card Returned, listed in the results. Hopefully those that were unable to complete their cards this season now know the commitment they are making and will be better able to manage their shooting schedule next Winter!
Please be warned that the intension is to limit any extensions to the following round (effectively two weeks). As always, there should be a good reason for any requested extension.
Alan Anderson (LBTSA Benchrest Organiser)
Club Pairs League
The results of the final round of the new Club Pairs League have just been published. Take the link under Competitions above to see full details, but the headlines are:
The winners of Division 1 are Balerno & Currie A (Alasdair Horne and Niall Georgeson), who kept Pentland A behind them all the way.
The winners of Division 2 are Prestonpans B (Greg McMillan and Will Horton) who took top spot after swapping 1st & 2nd places with their C team all season.
The top average pair was, unsurprisingly, Balerno & Currie.
Congratulations to all, and thanks to Robin Thomson for running the competition.
This competition has got off to a good start, so perhaps more clubs will be encouraged to join in next season.
Team Postal League
The Team Postal League has finished and congratulations go to all the winners:
Division 1: Pentland
Division 2: George Watson’s A
Division 3: Edinburgh University B
Division 4: George Watson’s C
The top average award (The Duncan Cup) goes to A S Bruce of Balerno & Currie.
The top Junior average award (The Scott Shield) goes to R Watt of George Watson’s.
The Best Improvement award (The Smith Shield) goes to R Watt of George Watson’s.
The award (so far un-specified) for the best improved team goes to the Edinburgh University C team.
The last one was introduced last season and is for the team which has the best average at the end of the season converted to its Macrae handicap equivalent based on its declared average.
Take the Team Postal League link from the Competitions dropdown above to see full details.
Club Pairs League
The results for round 9 of the Club Pairs League are now available.
Balerno & Currie seem to have division 1 in the bag, but it’s neck and neck in division 2 between Prestonpans B and Prestonpans C. These two have been swapping P1 and P2 all season, and this time the B team are in the lead by a single point having had the top score in the round. Round 10 will decide!
Individual League
The results for February in the Individual Postal League are now available. Take the link in the Competitions menu item above to see full details.
LBTSA Championships
The scores for the first round of the Open Championship and the winners of the Ladies, Veterans, Junior and the Inexpert A & B class Championships have been issued.
The Open Championship Final will be held at Balerno & Currie on Thursday 30th March. The finalists’ clubs have been informed of those qualifiying.
Top scorer in the qualifying round: A S Bruce (Balerno & Currie)
Ladies Champion: Miss L Brechin, George Watson’s
Veterans Champion: R Thomson, Watsonians
Junior Champion: Miss L Brechin, George Watson’s
Inexpert A Champion: A Lehmann, Edinburgh University
Inexpert B Champion: J Brayshaw, George Watson’s
Congratulations to them all. Take the Competitions/Championships link above to see the runners-up as well.
STS Speedway competition
Here’s a message from Robin Thomson, our Chairman and also the organiser of Scottish Target Shooting’s ‘Speedway’ championship. There’s a postal qualifying stage and a shoulder-to-shoulder Final. There are two categories – one for A&B class shooters and one for C&D class shooters. Nominally each would have a S-S Final but the low entry in the C&D competition means there won’t be one this season as it needs nine competitors to run properly. The A&B Final is for the top sixteen qualifiers:
I’d like to congratulate Edinburgh University on their representation in the C & D Speedway event: their 3 shooters constituted 50% of the entries !
I should also congratulate Sinclair Bruce of Balerno & Currie and Nick Baker, of Watsonians in qualifying for the A & B Final – to be shot at Balerno & Currie on March 5th. They were the only A & B class entries from the LBTSA area!
Unfortunately, having qualified in second place, due to other commitments Sinclair is unable to attend the final.
Pairs League
The new Club Pairs League is rolling along nicely. We have two divisions with six and five pairs respectivley, representing five clubs. The results for rounds 5 and 6 have just been published.
Division 1 is already looking good for the pair from Balerno & Currie, with Watsonians A, Pentland and Edinburgh University A all scrapping it out for the runners-up spot.
Division 2 is much closer, with Prestonpans C currently just ahead of their B team clubmates: these two pairs have been swapping P1 and P2 for two or three rounds now. Which one will take the top spot at the end?
Individual League
The stickers for this season’s competition will be sent out after Christmas as the organiser is still waiting for the labels to arrive through the post.
The divisions have all been made up from the entries received, and can be seen in the Individual Postal League dropdown under the Competitions menu above.
Results
In a flurry of activity, the results for round 4 of the Team Postal league, the latest three matches in the Shoulder to Shoulder league, round 4 of the Pairs league and round 3 of the Benchrest league have all been uploaded to the site today. Round 4 of the World Cup went up yesterday.
Reminder
Clubs are reminded that entries for the Championships and the Individual Postal league close on Monday 28th November. Get in touch if you need the forms.
Get them in soon!
Frank Gifford
Frank’s funeral will be at Warriston Crematorium at 11:30 am on Monday 31st October.
Balerno & Currie Open Shoot
After a two-year COVID-enforced hiatus, Balerno & Currie Rifle Club is once again holding its annual Open Meeting, on the weekend of 12th & 13th November commenciing 10am each day.
Entry forms can be obtained on request here. Postal entries in advance are encouraged, but entries will be accepted on the day subject to range space.
The meeting consists of two 30-shot competitions in four classes, shot in six 10-minute details (which need not be shot consecutively). There are also Ladies, Junior, Pairs and Team (of 3) competitions.
Catering will be provided (bacon rolls a speciality), so there’s no need to bring your own lunch.
A sad week
I have the sad duty to record the passing of two local shooters this week, both members of Balerno & Currie.
Frank Gifford passed away in a nursing home yesterday (13th October). He had been unwell for some time and had moved there after a lengthy stay in hospital. Frank had been a member of the renowned Edinburgh Citizens club before it folded and he joined BCRC, eventually becoming its Hon. President. He was also active in the world of lawn bowls.
News has just come in today that Adrian Weatherhead died last Sunday while on holiday in Portugal. No further details are currently available. He was 79 and a true gentleman. He shot prone for most of his shooting career but latterly turned his hand to air pistol shooting. In earlier days, he was a talented athlete and represented GB and Scotland at middle- and long-distance running. Here’s a link to his profile as a runner.
New season kicking off
Entries are now all in for the Shoulder-to-Shoulder league, the Team Postal league, the Benchrest league and the new Pairs league, and the stickers for the latter three will be winging their way to the participating clubs in the near future.
The S/S league is again being run by Greg McMillan, the TPL by Amanda Puchalla, the BR league by Alan Anderson and the Pairs league will be run by Robin Thomson. Thanks to all those for doing these tasks.
Take the relevant competition’s link int the ‘Competitions’ dropdown above to see pre-season details (shooting dates, etc).
Apparently there were only three entries for the CYOH and this writer is investigating how that comp will proceed, if at all.
Edinburgh Civil Service RC
Readers may or may not know that Edinburgh Civil Service Rifle club has closed. It latterly had a smallish membership and the fee required for Home Office approval in order for it to continue proved to be too much, and also the long-standing Secretary, Graeme Fraser, had decided to stand down. Graeme was the club’s secretary for almost twenty years, so he has earned his retirement.
The club was founded on 16th November 1905 (boasting 225 members only a month later) so it was one of the oldest rifle clubs in the UK. They celebrated their centenary with a black-tie dinner in Leith’s Vintners Rooms which was as close a venue as they could find to their original range premises in Lower Broughton Road. The original members formed the club ‘as they recognised that the manhood of the nation should learn how to handle the service rifle and how to shoot straight … in a spirit of loyalty of patriotism and devotion to King and country‘. This was in line with Field Marshal Earl Roberts’ well-known view at the time that British soldiers in the Boer War were hopeless shots and indeed the Earl was appointed the club’s first Hon President the following year.
The club has operated in several different ranges over the years. In 1908 they moved to the range under the Synod Hall (a now-demolished cinema/theatre in Castle Terrace). Several other local clubs also used that range for many years following, but in 1911 Civil Service were off again to a new range in a hall below Lady Glenorchy’s United Free Church at the top of Leith Walk. It has also been described as being below the Playhouse Cinema but was known to the local shooting community just as ‘Greenside’, referring to the narrow lane used to access it. Again, that range was shared by other clubs (Edinburgh Citizens and Eastfield) but Civil Service was the primary occupier. The club remained there for seventy years until the closure of those premises forced another move in 1981, this time to share (with Edinburgh Railways RC and other clubs) the quirky range underneath Waverley Station’s main concourse. Hardly anyone apart from the local shooters even knew of its existence and members and opposing teams often received strange looks from passing travellers as they carried their rifles towards the unmarked and inconspicuous door down to their subterranean lair. It was a warm range due to the station’s steam heating pipes going along the ceiling of the clubroom. There was an incident a few years later when one of the three-inch diameter high-voltage cables in a service tunnel in the roof-space shorted out with a loud bang and it all went dark. Shooting was abandoned for that night.
In 1991 after a tightening up of range safety regulations caused the closure of that range, the club was forced to move again, this time to share the range of Dalkeith Buccleuch RC in the grounds of Dalkeith Palace, but after another ten-year stint the estate decided to redevelop the range area and the club had to find new premises yet again. That move was to the range of Balerno & Currie RC and proved to be their last.
The club effectively became an ‘open’ club when an EGM in 1958 resolved to allow ‘friends and relatives’ of Edinburgh and district civil servants to be admitted as associate members of the club. That was probably in response to a declining membership.
Notable shooters to come from the club included Tom Dowie and Jack and George Proudfoot, who among them won many trophies. Tom was also the County Secretary for some years in the 1970s.
It’s sad to see yet another club having to close, but that seems to be the way things are going these days. Masonic, Pathhead, Dalkeith, Selkirk and now ECS have all gone in the last few years.
(My thanks to Graeme Fraser for supplying virtually all of the above information, padded out with this writer’s personal knowledge)
Proposed lead ban
All readers should read and take note of the paper issued on the NSRA’s site regarding the proposal to ban the use of all lead ammunition in this country in a relatively short timescale. The Health & Safety Executive has issued (another) consultation paper asking for opinions. Please respond to it – the more who object to the proposal the more chance there is of this being overturned.
As the paper says, the ‘antis’ will be all over this and the shooting sports need to stand up for themselves or risk getting steamrollered into oblivion through apathy. THIS IS SERIOUS, FOLKS.
Closing dates for entries are approaching fast
Entries to some of the Association’s competitions (Shoulder-to-Shoulder League, Team Postal League, Pairs, Benchrest and CYOH) close on Monday 5th September. Get them in now!
The closing date for the Individual Postal League and the Individual Championships is 29th November.
The closing date for the ‘World Cup’ competition has been extended by a week to 19th September.
Secretaries of affiliated clubs have already been sent the entry forms, but they can also be downloaded via the ‘Forms & Minutes’ link in the sidebar (use Contact Us if you do not know the password).
