LBTSA Shoulder-to-Shoulder League 2023-24
News, Results and League Tables for Division 1

Team Captains – please remember the 3 day rule: the scores should be with the shoulder to shoulder secretary within 3 days of the match being shot (excluding Sundays), either by traditional postcard signed by both captains on the night, or by both of them emailing in the e-card (see main S/S page for details). The League Secretary also asks that a phone-photo be taken of the scoreboard to act as a backstop for lost results and help resolve any issues that may subsequently arise.

*** The average of any reserve must be provided on the result card of their first match (if not before) ***
(Handicap League rule)

Please note: The handicapping system being used this season is again the Bayley system, not the Macrae system.

Latest News (Match commentary by the League Secretary: see below for earlier commentaries)

19/02/2024: Prestonpans v George Heriot’s FP. Calamity for one Prestonpans shooter in their last match of the season against George Heriot’s  when his sling fell off whilst shooting so ended up with an unrepresentative score on detail 1.  George Heriot’s ran out winners of the scratch match by a score of 72-45.  In the individual match ups Prestonpans managed to take 2 points from Heriot’s.  The handicap match was won by Prestonpans despite the calamitous score on detail 1.  Best scorer of the evening for Prestonpans  was T McIntosh, one of their junior shooters, with a 7 points off total score.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriot’s was D Aitken with a 4 points off total score.

Previous match commentary:

19/10/2023: George Heriot’s FP v Prestonpans. The 2023-2024 Shoulder to Shoulder competition got under way last night and the experience was a new one for both George Heriot’s and Prestonpans as the Balerno & Currie range now has brand spanking new electronic targets.  After some tuition on the workings of the system it was noted that a cross shot should now be virtually impossible (more later), all shooters had practice shots to acclimatise how everything worked  and the competition got under way.  There were no real surprises in that  George Heriot’s easily won the 2 match points, and in the individual match ups Prestonpans managed to pinch 2 points from Heriots. However much to the surprise of the Prestonpans shooters, considering two of their shooters had particularly bad cards, they took the handicap match by the slimmest of margins.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriot’s was C Watson with a 7 points off total score and the best scorer for Prestonpans was W Horton with a 15 points off total score.

Now to the cross shot statement….Prestonpans shooter P Crosbie totally disproved the earlier statement in that a cross shot on electronic  targets is entirely possible as that is what he did.  Needless to say any future cross shots in the competition will be classed as a Crosbie Cross.

26/10/2023: Watsonians v Balerno & Currie.  2nd match underway and this commentary is coming from sunny Calpe in Spain.  The score could not have been closer as Balerno & Currie edged the scratch match against Watsonians by a mere 3 points 41 to 38. In the individual match ups R Dove and J Brown from Watsonians took 2 points each so that ended up even stevens between the teams at 4 points per team.  The handicap match was won by Balerno & Currie.  Best scorer of the evening for Watsonians was J Brown with a 6 points off total score and the best scorer for Balerno & Currie was A Horne with a 7 points off total score.

02/11/2023: Prestonpans v Watsonians. A bad night for the Prestonpans team as one of their shooters had problems with his sights and had to borrow one of his team mate’s rifles and consequently Prestonpans were defeated by a 98-42 score line.  So 2 match points to the Watsonians team as well as all 8 points in the individual match ups.  The handicap match was won by Watsonians.  The best scorer of the evening for Prestonpans was W Horton with a 16 points off total score.  Best scorer of the evening for Watsonians was N Baker with a 4 points off total score.

09/11/2023: Balerno & Currie v George Heriot’s FP. In this extremely well shot out match it was honours even with a score line of 39-39 so 1 match point each.  In the individual match ups it was just as close with each team taking 4 match points each. Balerno & Currie won the handicap match.  Even the best scorer of the evening was a tie so for Balerno & Currie it was A Horne with a 4 points off total score and with the same 4 off total score best scorer for George Heriot’s was D Aitken.

16/11/2023: George Heriot’s FP v Watsonians. A victory last night for Watsonians away to George Heriot’s by a score line of 40-27.  2 match points to Watsonians and in the individual match ups 2 points went to Watsonians and 6 to George Heriot’s.  The handicap match was won by the Watsonians team.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriot’s was D Aitken with a 9 points off total score and best scorer of the evening for Watsonians was A Dove with a 3 points off total score.

07/12/2023: Balerno & Currie v Prestonpans. An off night for the Prestonpans team meant an easy victory for Balerno & Currie by a score of 37-80 so the 2 match points to Balerno and Currie.  The B&C team took all 8 individual match up points and the also won the handicap match as well so a clean sweep for Balerno & Currie.  Best scorer for the Balerno & Currie team was A Horne with a 3 points off total score.  Best scorer for the beleaguered Prestonpans team was G McMillan with a 14 points off total score.

14/12/2023: George Heriot’s FP v Balerno & Currie. In a closely shot match Balerno & Currie beat George Heriot’s with a score of 41-37 taking both 2 scratch points.  George Heriot’s did manage to take 2 points from Balerno & Currie in the individual match ups and the handicap match was won by Balerno & Currie.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriot”s was a tie between D Aitken and S R McKenzie who each shot an 8 points off total score.  Best scorer of the evening for Balerno & Currie was R Bain with a 4 points off total score.

14/12/2023: Watsonians v Prestonpans. An easy win for Watsonians versus Prestonpans although the Pans team greatly improved their score from their previous match.  The 2 scratch match points to Watsonians with a score line of 16-61.  All 8 points in the individual match ups went to Watsonians  and just to rub salt into the Pans wounds Watsonians won the handicap match as well.  Best scorer of the evening for Watsonians was actually a team tie with all four shooters scoring a 4 points off total score…..This is a first for me in all the years I have been Shoulder to Shoulder match secretary!  Best scorer of the evening for Prestonpans was G McMillan with an 11 points off total score.

18/01/2024: Prestonpans v Balerno & Currie. An unfortunate no show by a Balerno & Currie shooter in this Prestonpans v Balerno & Currie match saw the 2 scratch match points going to Prestonpans by default.  In the individual match ups Balerno & Currie unsurprisingly took 6 of the 8 match points with Prestonpans getting the 2 due to the non show shooter.   Best scorer of the evening for Prestonpans was G McMillan with a 15 points off total score and the best scorer for Balerno & Currie was A Horne with a 2 points off total score.

01/02/2024: Balerno & Currie v Watsonians. In a closely shot match Watsonians turned out to be winners by a score line of 26-17 so taking the 2 match points.  In the individual match ups Balerno & Currie managed a tie so 1 point to them and 7 to Watsonians.  As a consolation Balerno & Currie won the handicap match.  Best scorer of the evening for Balerno & Currie was R Bain with a 5 points off totals score; best scorer of the evening for Watsonians was A Dove with a 2 points off total score.
