Team Captains – please remember the 3 day rule: the scores should be with the shoulder to shoulder secretary within 3 days of the match being shot (excluding Sundays), either by traditional postcard signed by both captains on the night, or by both of them emailing in the e-card (see main S/S page for details). The League Secretary also asks that a phone-photo be taken of the scoreboard to act as a backstop for lost results and help resolve any issues that may subsequently arise.

*** The average of any reserve used must be provided on the result card of their first match (if not before) ***
(Handicap League rule)

Please note: The handicapping system being used this season is again the Bayley system, not the Macrae system.

Previous match commentary:

16/10/2018: Hawick v Watsonians. Well the start of another exciting S-2-S season is under way.   Last night’s match between Hawick and Watsonians was no exception and the finishing scores were very close,  only 3 points in it.
In a closely shot match Hawick won the scratch match by 30 points to 33, taking 6 match points.  Watsonians took the 2 points in the individual match up by A Dove.  Hawick also won the handicap match.   Best scorer of the evening for Hawick was A Anderson with a 4 points off total score and best scorer for Watsonians was P Brett with a 6 points off total score.

18/10/2018: Balerno & Currie v Prestonpans. This match up turned out to a close run thing.   Balerno and Currie won the scratch match by just 5 points – 43 to 48.   As to match points Prestonpans took 2  from  Balerno and Currie thanks to G McMillan.   On a positive note for Prestonpans they won the handicap match.  Best score of the evening went to Balerno and Currie’s N Georgeson  with  a 3 points off total score and for Prestonpans M Williamson with 6 points off and G McMillan with an 8 points off total were the best scorers (first time in single figures).

23/10/2018: Watsonians v George Heriot’s FP.  Sadly only 3 shooters turned up for the George Heriot’s team  for this match against Watsonians so the result was a foregone conclusion.  However George Heriot’s did manage to take 2 match points from Watsonians.  Watsonians also won the handicap match as well.  Best scorer for Watsonians this evening was P Brett with an impressive1 point off total score and best score for George Heriot’s was C Mackenzie with an 8 points off total score.

29/10/2018: Prestonpans v George Heriot’s FP. George Heriot’s turned up with a full complement of shooters for this match at the Prestonpans range.  The Prestonpans team slipped slightly in scoring in this match down to 55 points scored from last week’s high of 48 points scored.  Sadly they did not score any points so it was a clean sweep of the scratch and matchplay points for George Heriot’s.  However, the news was not all bad for the Prestonpans team as they won the handicap match and top the handicap league….that has never been said before….well done to the Prestonpans team…keep up the good shooting.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriot’s was S Mackenzie with a 5 points off total score and a special mention to the best scorer for Tranent [? Ed.], J Tracey one of the Prestonpans juniors, with a very good 6 points off total score.

06/11/2018: Hawick v Prestonpans. This was always going to be a hard match for the Prestonpans shooters and it turned out to be so with three of the Prestonpans team not shooting their first cards as well as they have been previously but there was a considerable improvement in scores on their second cards.  Hawick won the scratch match and took all match points with some impressive shooting although I’m told they could have done better!!!   Hawick also won the handicap match but not by much…if the Prestonpans team had better first cards then they probably would have pinched the handicap win.  Best score of the night was A Anderson of Hawick with a 1 point off total score and the best score for Prestonpans was, again, their junior shooter J Tracey with a 13 points off total score….he can and usually does shoot better than this.

08/11/2018: Balerno & Currie v Watsonians.  Turn up for the books here with Balerno & Currie beating Watsonians by 5 points.  In the individual match-ups Watsonians took 6 points and in the handicap match it was also a win for Balerno & Currie.   Watsonians are not shooting at their best so there is hope for the rest of the teams in the league.  Best score for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 2 points off total score and for Watsonians a 9 points off total score was shared by P Brett and R Thomson.

22/11/2018: Balerno & Currie v George Heriot’s FP. Closely shot match with only 4 points in it with the 2 points for the scratch match going to the Balerno & Currie team.  In the individual match ups there were two wins and 4 points for Balerno & Currie, 2 points to George Heriots and one tied match up for a point apiece.  The handicap match was won by George Heriot’s.   Best scorer for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 2 points off total score and the best scorer for George Heriot’s was D Aitken with a 6 points off total score.

22/11/2018: Prestonpans v Hawick. Prestonpans had high hopes of getting their score down closer to Hawick but sadly it was not to be this evening.  The 2 points for the scratch match went, unsurprisingly, to the Hawick team as well as all 8 points in the individual  match ups.  The handicap match was won by Prestonpans  keeping them top of the handicap league.   Best scorer for Hawick was W Vaughan with a 2 points off total score and the best scorer for Prestonpans went to 3 shooters all with a 12 points off total score.

06/12/2018: Hawick v George Heriot’s FP. In what is normally a closely shot match one of the Heriot’s shooters, unfortunately, had a bad night so the match result went Hawick’s way as did all the individual match ups.  Hawick also won the handicap match.  Best scorer for Hawick was A Anderson with a 3 points off total score and the best scorer for George Heriots was C Watson with a 7 points off total score.  The George Heriot’s team would like to commend the pies that the Hawick team supplied for the after shoot cuppa.

10/01/2019: Prestonpans v Balerno & Currie. For the first match of the New Year the Prestonpans shooters decided to have an off night, especially their club’s best shooter.  So in light of this Balerno & Currie ran out easy winners on the night taking the match points and the entire individual Matchplay points.  But all was not lost for the Prestonpans team as once again they took the 2 points for the win in the handicap match  thus keeping them at the top of the handicap league where they have been resident since the start of the league campaign……however the question is…..can they stay there?   Watch this space…..  Best scorer for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 5 points off total score and best score for  Prestonpans, a  big well done to,  J Tracey (a junior) with a 9 points off total score (he normally shoots lower scores).

15/01/2019: Watsonians v Hawick. Another closely shot between these two teams with Hawick coming out on top with the 2 match points.  However, in the individual match ups Watsonians took 6 out of the 8 match points with Hawick only taking 2.  In the handicap match Hawick took the 2 points.  Best scorer for Watsonians was R Thomson with a 3 points off total score and best for Hawick was A Anderson and K Nixon both with a 4 points off total score.  At the half way point in the season Hawick top the scratch league by 2 points from Balerno & Currie but B&C are one match behind.  In the handicap league Prestonpans still sit top of the league with 5 played, 4 won and 1 lost closely followed by Hawick with the same played, won, lost but PP are top due to their aggregate…..according to the league table.

17/01/2019: George Heriot’s FP v Prestonpans.  Another off night for three of the Prestonpans team so an easy victory for George Heriot’s  taking  the match points as well as all the individual match points.  However, the Prestonpans team pulled the proverbial rabbit out of the hat by winning the handicap match, by the merest of margins, which keeps them at the top of the handicap league table.  Best scorer on the night for George Heriot’s was shared between D Aitken and C W Mackenzie with a 6 points off total score.  Best scorer for Prestonpans was, once again, their junior shooter J Tracey with an 8 points off total score.

24/01/2019: George Heriot’s FP v Hawick.  Hawick as ever shot well and took the 2 match points which keep them firmly cemented at the top of the scratch league.   George Heriot’s were only able to take 1 point from Hawick with a tied score in the individual matchups. Hawick also went on to win the handicap match which puts them in second place just a whisker behind Prestonpans.  Best scorer of the evening for George Heriot’s was C Watson with a 4 points off total score and best for Hawick was K Nixon with a 2 points off total score.

31/01/2019: Watsonians v Balerno & Currie. Watsonians have their mojo back.  After a few matches with some not so good scoring Watsonians are back with some low scoring taking the scratch match points, however Balerno & Currie managed to take 2 points in the individual match ups and Watsonians also won the handicap match.   Best scorer for Watsonians was A Dove with a 1 point off total score and the best scorer for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 4 points off total score.

05/02/2019: Watsonians v Prestonpans. Another low scoring evening by Watsonians with a clean sweep of the scratch, individual match ups and the handicap matches.  However by Prestonpans’ usual standard they did not shoot that badly and recorded their second best score of the competition.  Best scorers for Watsonians was shared by R Thomson and D Caughey with 3 points off total score and the best scorer for Prestonpans was M Williamson with a 7 points off total score.

07/02/2019: Balerno & Currie v Hawick.  Now this was what you call a closely shot match. In the end, Hawick ran out match winners in the scratch match by a solitary point.  However a different story in the individual match ups where Balerno and Currie took two matches and one was tied so 5 points to Balerno and Currie with 3 going to Hawick.  Some consolation was that Balerno and Currie won the handicap match.  Best scorers of the evening were N Georgeson for Balerno & Currie with a 3 points off total score and for Hawick it was tied between W Vaughn and I Burton both with a 6 points off total score.

21/02/2019: Prestonpans v Watsonians. This was Prestonpans’ final match of the season and although they scored well they were unable to topple Watsonians.  The scratch match  points,  individual match up points and the handicap match all went to Watsonians.  The best scorer on the night for Prestonpans was M Utsi in only his second ever shoulder to shoulder match and scored a creditable 7 points off total.  His three team mates unusually scored exactly the same total points off.  Best scorer for Watsonians was A Dove with a 3 points off total score.

14/03/2019: George Heriot’s FP v Watsonians.  Watsonians had an off evening on Thursday with a high total points off score of 36 allowing George Heriot’s, with their best overall score of the season (22 points off total score), to take the 2 scratch match points and 6 of the 8 individual match up points.  George Heriot’s also won the handicap match as well.  Best scores of the evening for George Heriots was D Aitken with a 3 points off total score and the best scorers for Watsonians were A Dove and P Brett both with a 6 points off total score.

14/03/2019: Hawick v Balerno & Currie.  In what was the  second  closest match of the season and between the same two teams,  this return match between Hawick and Balerno & Currie was separated by  just 2 points this time (1 the previous match).  The scratch match victory went to Hawick along with 6 of the individual  match up points but to the delight of the Prestonpans team Balerno & Currie won the handicap match.  Best scorer for Hawick was A Anderson with a 2 points off total score and the best scorer for Balerno & Currie was N Georgeson with a 3 points off total score.
